We’ve gotten good news from up north about this year’s snow goose hatch. The data for the 2024-25 goose hatch seem to show that snow goose reproduction was good to excellent.
In fact, the news was so encouraging that if would have been a grand slam except for the large colony on Baffin Island.
What does a good hatch mean to a goose hunter? Let me explain. A good juvenile-to-adult ratio is essential to decoying snow geese. Without a sufficient number of young grey birds, getting snow geese to decoy is nearly impossible. The on-site reports from banders in Canada are recording excellent numbers of young goslings.
White-fronted Geese
Reports are very encouraging that the white-fronted goose hatch was also excellent. Speckle-bellies nest in Eastern Alaska and Western Saskatchewan. Arkansas winters 90 percent of the mid-continent white-fronted goose population, and since Speckle-bellies are a bread-and-butter bird this is exciting news. We’re looking forward to a spectacular speckle belly season (not to mention that we’re offering a deeply discounted price for early season spec hunts!)
Ross Geese
It seems that Ross geese had an excellent hatch as well (even on Baffin Island.) A smaller, dumber version of the snow goose, young Ross Geese are extremely gullible and put on quite a show flip flopping or whiffling while decoying.
All in all, this great hatch report is the equation for great goose hunting. If you haven’t booked your trip, you better hurry! Dates are filling up fast. Call now 870-573-3002!
